Winter weather is upon us

Kara BanksCity News

With our first snowfall of the season expected, Edgerton public works crews are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us. The snowplows are prepped and we are well stocked on salt.

The response to each winter weather event is unique. The forecast will determine if the City will pre-treat roads or if we will wait until the snow begins to fall.

If there is a snowfall of two inches or more, residents must remove their vehicles from the street under Edgerton’s Municipal Code (see page 8) within two hours to allow plows to clear the roads. If a vehicle is not removed, the sheriff’s office will be notified and the vehicle may be towed at the owner’s expense. The City will post information about the snowfall on Edgertonks.org and on our official Facebook and Twitter pages.

Residents are also responsible for clearing sidewalks on their property within 48 hours after the snowfall ends.

Cold Weather Driving Tips

If you need to get out during winter weather, AAA has some tips to help you stay safe:

  • Keep a bundle of cold-weather gear in your car, such as extra food and water, warm clothing, a flashlight, a glass scraper, blankets, medications, and more.
  • Make certain your tires are properly inflated and have plenty of tread.
  • Keep at least half a tank of fuel in your vehicle at all times.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, such as on ice and snow.
  • Accelerate and decelerate slowly. Apply the gas slowly to regain traction and avoid skids. Don’t try to get moving in a hurry and take time to slow down for a stoplight. Remember: It takes longer to slow down on icy roads.
  • Increase your following distance to five to six seconds. This increased margin of safety will provide the longer distance needed if you have to stop.

The City of Edgerton wants everyone to stay safe this winter season.
