UPDATE (7/18/2025): Due to the rain this week, KDHE is now recommending Edgerton City Lake be placed on a WATCH, not a warning. Further testing will happen next week.
ORIGINAL POST (7/16/2025): The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory for Edgerton City Lake due to a blue-green algae bloom.
A warning indicates a Harmful Algae Bloom is expected or present. The algae may look like foam, scum, or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown, or red.
KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:
- Avoid contact with the water.
- Clean fish well and discard guts
- Do not allow pets in the water and keep animals away from decaying algae on the shore.
- If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.
- Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.
If you or your pets come into contact with harmful algae, call a doctor or veterinarian if you experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, irritated eyes, seizures, breathing problems or other unexplained illness.
