Mayor Donald Roberts, City Council members and community leaders broke ground on The Greenspace on Friday, August 11.
“This is the place where Edgerton has gathered for many years and The Greenspace will continue that proud tradition. It’s going to bring more people downtown too, which is great for our local small businesses,” said Mayor Roberts. “This is the first brick building constructed in over 100 years in downtown Edgerton, so it’s great that so many folks came out to celebrate this historic event.”
“The Greenspace has been talked about for many years. We started this process in 2019 by gathering input from residents, but the pandemic delayed construction. It’s really thrilling to finally be breaking ground,” says City Administrator Beth Linn. “We’ve really tried to make sure this new gathering space checks a lot of the boxes for what the community wants.”
The Greenspace includes a splash pad and outdoor stage, plus a gymnasium, fitness room, and spaces that residents can rent out for parties or events. Community events like Senior Lunch and Bingo, Frontier Days, and Meat Inferno will also be able to use the building.
The City hired Combes Construction to construct the building, with an anticipated opening in 2025. The new community gathering place will be located in downtown Edgerton at the corner of East 3rd Street and Nelson Street.
