Street preservation work continues in Edgerton next week, with crews from Mid-America Road Builders scheduled to chip-seal several streets on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 8 and 9.
Chip sealing is a pavement-preservation treatment that helps protect an existing road surface and extend its useful life. The process involves applying an asphalt material to the roadway, placing small rock chips over it, and then rolling the surface to help set the chips in place.
Homes directly impacted by the work should receive a notice on their front door with information about the upcoming work.
Streets included in this work:
- West 7th Street and Hulett, north of Nelson
- 1st Street, north of Nelson
- Hulett Street, from 1st Street to East 4th Street
- McCarty Street, from 1st Street to East 4th Street
If you live on one of these streets, please plan ahead and move vehicles off the street before crews begin work.
What should residents expect?
Chip sealing is different from traditional asphalt paving, so the finished road may look and feel different at first. Residents should expect:
- Loose rock on the road. Some loose chips are normal after the material is applied. They will be worked into the surface and removed as part of the process.
- Dust and construction noise. Crews will be operating equipment in the area while the work is underway.
- Slower traffic. Drivers should slow down, use caution and follow any directions from crews or traffic-control personnel.
- Temporary access impacts. There may be short periods when access to a street or driveway is limited while crews are working.
- No street parking. Vehicles must be moved from the streets being chip-sealed while work is underway.
The appearance of the roadway will change during the process. Loose rock immediately following the chip seal is normal. Drivers should slow down and use extra caution until the work is complete.
